George Bizet’s Carmen has been selected to open the Xth festival “Opéra en Plein Air” this year. The four-act opera has a libretto by Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy.
The story is set in Seville, Spain, in 1830, and concerns the eponymous Carmen, a beautiful Gypsy with a fiery temper. Free with her love, she woos the corporal Don José, an inexperienced soldier. Their relationship leads to his rejection of his former love, mutiny against his superior, and joining a gang of smugglers.
So, what can be more magical than an opera under the stars with the Château de Sceaux ?
This parks outside of Paris, located just south of the city. With its château, large park, fountains, and walking paths, it’s easy to spend the day here.

Aida is an opera in four acts by Giuseppe Verdi to an Italian libretto by Antonio Ghislanzoni, based on a scenario written by French Egyptologist Auguste Mariette.
More than 500 performers (including eight soloists, 110 choir singers, 119 musicians and 300 dancers and extras) will stage a larger-than-life version of this powerful work under the direction of stage director Charles Roubaud, who is well versed in Verdi.
