Ever since it was founded in 1931 by the wealthy socialite and patron Gertrude Venderbilt Whitney, the Whitney Museum of American Art has been responsible for curating what is arguably the most important collection of 20th and 21st century.
This includes many of the most emblematic and exceptional works associated with the 'pop art' movement which coincided with the emergence of American consumer culture in the decades following the Second World War.
The Musee Maillol is currently showing more than 5 dozen works in a Pop Art exhibition that began September 22nd and will run until January 21st, 2018. Many of these paintings are being shown for the first time in Paris. Notable works on display as part of this exhibit include Andy Warhol's 'Marilyn', Jasper Johns' flag series, and Roy Lichenstein's enlarged comic strip panels. Although the many techniques and aesthetic approaches vary, the one common theme in all of the pop art is an exaltation of the 'every day'.
