Many of the best artists and painters are those that challenge convention, break the rules and – in turn – change the perceptions of their peers. Seruiser is one such artist, and it all happened with a single landscape painting. The Talisman, as the piece would later come to be known, started out as little more than an open air study of the colours in the Pont-Aven landscape. The simplicity of the forms and bold use of colour led to a synthetic landscape that captured the imagination of its viewers. The connection to Paul Gaugin, the teacher that gave the lesson, just adds to the importance of the work. It is an example of how one shared experience between two artists, and one canvas, can generate ideas and conversations for decades to come. 

The painting is part of an exhibition called Sérusier’s 'The Talisman’, a prophecy of colour at the Musee d’Orsay. The show begins at the end of January next year and continues right through to the end of April.
